Whereas its location used to be its only selling point, the once-grubby City Hotel has recently received a much-needed revamp with an attractive, glass-fronted lobby and a whole new wing of smart-ish rooms. These are the only rooms we recommend here; there are fan-only standard rooms in the old part of the building, but, when we went to visit, the corridor was so dark, we didn’t dare venture down it!
